Up Country Shocks

I am done. Labored all day trying to get my stock rusted on front shockers off without messing up the threads. They got loose. I did. The rubber grommet is shot and needs replacing. Not available through local stores since its the Up Country lift and more than twice the size of the standard ones. . They are available on line for $23.00 each. No thanks. Decided to replace the shocks, but I am having a heck of a time finding them. Local parts place has KYB, never heard of em, at $100 each. Anybody know an equally good shock for the up country lift that might be less money. I searched, before I ask and can't come up with a make and part number. Thanks. It's beer 30 time.

The up country package is only an inch higher than stock, so correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't any OEM spec'd shock work just fine?

[url]rockauto.com[url] has Monroe Reflex Monotube Up-country shocks, #911522 for $42.99 each. KYB is an economy brand they sell so I'll bet it's Chinese, although they are more expensive than Monroe for your application. ($60)

BTW, I once bought 4 Monroe 500 shocks for my 67 Camaro (this was before the Chinese invasion) and 2 were made in the US, one in Hungary, and the other in Brazil. They preformed perfectly.

From what I am able to decipher, the length of the shock is not important. The "valving" within the shock makes the difference. I brought my stock shock into the parts store with me. By side by side comparison the non up country shock is much smaller in circumference than the up country shock. Considerably more so. In addition, the grommet is much smaller in circumference as well. Once I told him it was the up country suspension, he looked it up and came up with a KYB shock he had to order. $100 each. I called two national chains O'Riley and Autozone. They came up with the same shock, same brand. Only difference was Riley was $16 each more. Neither were in stock.

I guess if I wanted to save a few bucks and put in the wrong part, I could do it. I'd rather not. In my area, there doesn't appear to be a less expensive alternative. Since Dave123 mentioned them, I looked up the Monroe on AMAZON and they are there for $48.00 each, free shipping. I am going to check these out. Thanks

I just got a set off eBay for the upcountry for $129 they ride ok stiffened it up quite a bit. Only problem was they didn't come with the top rubber mount, came with the underside fender well rubber which was smaller than the stock and worked fine but had to reuse the engine bay side rubber that has shrank and not as tight as I would like it to be.

I decided to get mine from AMAZON. I got the MONROE's. They were $48.00 each. If they come without the big grommet form the top of the fender weld in the engine compartment, I am sending them back. Thats is the part that wore out on mine and started this whole thing for me. I can't reuse em. That over sized grommet is $23.00 through Chrysler and not available in after market. I am only doing the fronts right now. Are those KYBs you purchased?

heathl 01-04-2016 11:05 PM

No, they were ultras. My mounts were worn also just did some modification to the mount to get the rubber to suck up. Just put an extra fender washer on the top of the mount. I did use kyb's on my other car they work pretty good.

I just had the Jeep dealer install new ones on mine an Overland with the Up Country pkg. They put my old ones in the boxes the new came out of and they were an OEM part, $190 out the door.

blueseasons 01-05-2016 11:01 AM

Each or both? And installed?
If that was for 2 fronts and installed, you did well. The KYB's from one independent parts store here were $100 each, and sixty something from O'Rylies with me installing them.
Did you notice how big the top grommet was on the OEM's?

Welcome to the forum.

The Up Country Suspension Group was an optional package that included 1" taller springs, really nice gas shocks, plus the skid plate package, covering the steering, transfer case and the fuel tank.

There was also a small decal on the interior glass by the spare tire indicating this option.
