I have 97 Grand Laredo with 4.0 engine. The t.c. has part time and full time position with automatic transmission. What transmissionn and t.c. do I have? Thank You!

The AW-4 tranny has a 6 position shifter.. P-R-N-D-3-1|2
I believe your 4.0L use that
The 46RH tranny is used behind the 5.2L engines
The NP231 TC is a part-time TC.. only use 4WD on unpaved or low traction surfaces. The shifter has a straight line pattern and has 2H-N|4HI-4LO (sort of 3 positions with N in the middle)
The NP242 transfer case operating ranges are:
2-wheel drive, part-time 4-wheel drive, full time
4-wheel drive and 4-wheel drive low.
The full time 4-wheel drive range is fully differentiated
and can be used at any time. The part time 4-wheel drive high and low ranges are not differentiated. They are for off road use only.
The NP249 is an all the time, transfer case with two operating ranges and a neutral position. Operating ranges are 4-high and 4-low. The 4-low range is used for extra pulling power in off road
situations.
I'd crawl under there and check the ID plates to be certain

That makes my t.c. np242. Seems to be acting up,thought about swapping out, but isnt this one of the better transfer cases? Maybe Ill just have it looked at. THANKS

The 97 ZJ didn't come with an AW4, only early 93 ZJs had the AW4, the rest came with either a 42RE with the I6 and a 44RE with the V8.

242 better than a 249... Well that depends on what you use it for. Id rather have a 96+ 249 over a 242 for DD/ light trail use due to the much better AWD system, but the obvious advantage of the 242 is the 4hi option. Both have 4lo so thats a wash.
Obviously if you wheel it often, 242 is ideal. 242 is also the weaket of the cases.....
