Default transmission rebuild

Hey new to the site and happy I found you guys. I have a 99 grand Cherokee Laredo with a 42re transmission I ran into a common problem with it called "limp mode" where the vehicle only drives in 3rd gear. I drove to a parts store and had a diagnostic ran was told it is a shift solenoid. Called a couple of shops and quoted about $250 for parts and labor. Mechanic just called and said he found half of a snap ring and metal shards in transmission pan so it needs a rebuild which he does not perform. So I was wondering if someone on here has had to rebuild theirs and how much it cost.

I've heard of estimates anywhere from $1200 to $3000. A lot depends on where you take it and what's got to be done. My dealer parts guy said $1200 for a crate trans plus installation. He told me they're getting scarce thru Mopar because they're not used in today's cars. That's for the 42re and 46re.

Welcome to CF!

Well I worked out a trade with the mechanic for a used one that he will flush and install for an old Chevy pickup of mine plus he is gonna fix a battered fender for me so things are looking up. Very happy because this is my second jeep and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Now that's a rip! Old Chevies are good for trade even if they don't run. One of the reasons I was a Chevy man for so long. The only thing I miss is the versatility of a pick-up.

Eh it might not be worth it in money but I can't afford to drive it at 8mpg and its just sitting in the Oregon rain rusting. I'm a truck guy myself but I moved to the city and don't really need it.
