Transmission and heater AC issues
 

Hey y'all. I am a college prof and amature novice mechanic who can find my way around an engine given enough time. AKA: go easy on me

The clutch on the AC compressor is going out. The belt whines when the AC and sometimes the heater is on. The clutch and or compressor are both too expensive right now. I don't need the AC for a while, but I need the defrost and heat.

QUESTION: can I install a shorter belt (the non AC version) and bypass the compressor clutch, and still have heat or at least defrost?

Second, the transmission is goofy. Sometimes I have to put it in neutral to start it and in park, it will roll forward.

SECOND QUESTION: Any thoughts on why this could be? Pix would be helpful if you have a solution.

Have you tried manually shifting the trani into park ?

To start it? Yes, I read that some people have luck pushing the stick forward all the way when it is in park. I have no luck there, it is either park of neutral depending on the mood of the jeep

What do you mean by manually? Under the vehicle?

Ya the actually shift plate i guess u culd say that licjs ur transmission into park that is connwcted to your shifter nob. Is ut manuall or auto ?

Sounds like the shifter cable might be a little out of adjustment.

When you sa the compressor clutch is going out, does it make noise all the time, or when that compressor engages. If the latter you could just unplug the compressor for the time being, unplug either right off the compressor or unplug the switch on the accumlator. Im not sure what engine you have, but still not sure if there is a A/C delete belt, some engines require an idler pulley in place of the compressor and use the same belt.

if you by pass the ac you should still have heat. and it squeals because the clutch is going out on the ac as u said. so keep the compressor off and you should have no problems.

Its an automatic 4.0. Can you show a picture or description of where the shift plate is and how it is adjusted? Is it between the seats or underneath the car?

Its not actually a plate but more of a metal lever, ive never looked at it on a four o but its connected to ur transmission by a cable that leads to ur shirter by various kinks. If u get under ur jeep and look for a cable that leads to ur shifter than.uve found it. Or better yet have someone in the jeep and shift from park to reverse and watch for a metal peice to slide foward and backward.

and you should be able to see it move without removing anything?

Ya in theory ha i have 93 zj so its not exactly the same but clise eniugh n e way and i didnt have to even get to far under the jeep to see it ,, it was right on the driver side of the transmision

Great, so today, I replaced the belt for a bypass belt. No more squeal. Do I need to disconnect the compressor electrically? Can I just pull a fuse?

As for the shift plate, I don't see movement under the chassis. I can see movement when I remove the NSS plug. But that is inside a pan with a lot of bolts on it on the underside of the tranny... Driver side.

Just need some help in how to adjust the shift plate and I am good to go.

K well maybe u cant see it did u try to tighten the shofter cable ? And do u have a bad cv axel bearing? Because i wore a cv axel bearing down and that made it slowly roll in park, because they used thw cv axel to keep it in park

Replace the neutral safety switch on the side of the transmission. About 15 bucks and it is the 1" drainplug looking thing on the driver side of the tranny.

I did that at the same time I replaced the intake manifold a few months back. At that time it would start in park sometimes or it had to be Neutral to start at other times.

I must have bumped something then, because the new NSS did not solve the issue, but when I started it up, shifting into drive made the car go in reverse.

Any idea what I might have bumped, or how to rectify the problem.
