Welcome to the forum.

This topic shows the ATF+4 is the recommended transmission fluid.

Please update your profile to list the year, engine and transmission, so the assistance provided will be effective.

There are many who use Dexron3 on the AW4 transmission, even though the linked TSB now specifies ATF+4 for that transmission.

I am pretty sure the V8 Grand Cherokees had the 44RE or 46RE Chrysler transmission, not the AW4. The RE transmissions require ATF4 the AW takes Mercon rated ATF.

The OP '93 V8 has a 46RH.

The current TSB now specifies ATF+4 for the AW4.

Don't put ATF4 in an AW4 regardless of what Chrysler recommends. It was made by Asin Warner and they spec Mercon fluid for it.

I had a transmission shop passive flush the my XJ's AW4 transmission . I told them I would like a synthetic ATF. So they called the local Jeep Dealership which recommended they use their Mopar ATF+4. Some time after the flush and fill using ATF+4 I started to notice shifting to be harder shifting wasn't terrible but wasn't as smooth as when using Dex/Merc.

I then flushed it myself and used some Amsoil ATF, started to shift smoothly and normal again. Amsoil ATF is a multi-aft ATF so it covers both ATF+4 and Dex/Merc.

ATF+4 a synthetic ATF has better specs than a Dino Dex/Merc i.e. better heat range, less oxidation, longevity, etc. If you want a synthetic Dex/Merc I would go with e.g. Mobil One ATF rated for Dex/Merc, the specs should be at least as good as a Mopar ATF+4 and the cost per quart is approx. the same.

I'm all for ATF+4 in my 42RE transmission, purchasing a case of 12 Mopar ATF+4 came to $6.00 per quart, with shipping.

What's sort of strange if you google ATF+4 and Dex/Merc compatibility, results will show the two ATFs aren't compatible. Which to me means that you shouldn't install ATF+4 into transmissions designed for Dex/Merc.

Below are links to compatibility and specifications for Mobil One ATF and Mobil ATF+4

Notice under Mobil ATF+4 "Application"

Mobil ATF+4 is not recommended for vehicles that require Ford MerconŽ or General Motors DexronŽ type fluids.

So I'm uncertain how Chrysler is able to recommend ATF+4 for a transmission that's designed to use Dex/Mec.
