Default Transmission disengages while in gear

I have a 1997 jeep grand cherokee. Every so often the transmission disengages so that I cant go forward or backwards. That is the transmission acts as if its in neutral while the selector shows it to be in drive or reverse. Eventually after moving the selector from park to drive it will engage and drive forward. It also works if I cut the ignition off and then restart.

Anyone else ever had this problem or know what's going on?

thanks for an info.

Being that it's a '97 the torque converter is controlled by electronic solenoids.. So either or both...

What did you find wrong. I've been checking this thread daily for about 2 weeks. I've got a similar problem posted on this forum:
https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f5/99grndcherokee-limited-45rfe-transmission-wont-go-gear-6899/

and this forum http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=635955
I'm still troubleshooting problem.
