I would think so, but i am not 100% because they switched to OBD2 in 96 not sure if there is a difference in the aw4's electronics package. should be able to search this site or google it to get a 100% answer. good luck

So I've been lookin and I found another jeep I'm going to buy. It has a 98 4.0L i6 just like my jeep now but its inside a 97. Mine is a 96 and I'm lookin at doing a transmission swap from the 96 to the 97 just to be clear it will work with out any mods or anything like that correct?

Yes the transmission from the 97 will work in the 96 but the 96 transmission will NOT work in the 94 I know this because I just ran into this issue with my 94, it has the 42rh with the 96 has the 42re.
