Default Transfercase Swap?

I've been looking and have not found the answer to my question. Hoping someone here can shed some light to my dilemma.

I have acquired a 97 Grand Cherokee Limited. It has the 5.2 with the 44re trans and 249 transfer case. I have a 242 transfer case from a 94 Grand Cherokee. Not sure what engine or trans it had.

Can someone give me a good idea of what spline the 97 would have, and if this swap might be a bolt in?

Thanks guys.

I just did a quick search using bing.com and it seems you can use your input shaft from the 249 in the 242 and solve all the interchange problems. Don't go wrenchin' until someone else chimes in on this one. You should find a floor plate indicator from a 242 donor as well.

Check out jeepforum.com for all the info you'd ever need about this swap.

Thanks for the input. I did't find anything on the input shaft from google, that's good to know. I will do more research on that, among other things.

And in case you don't want to read the write up:
All 96-98 ZJ's: .840" 23 spline input

Now THAT'S the link I was looking for! I bookmarked it this time so I can find it when I need it. Thanks for that.

The thing I find disturbing is I've lived less than 10 miles from the plant that built these t/cases since they started being made, yet nobody locally seems to know much about them as far as swaps are concerned. At least I've never talked to anyone.

The write-up does seem to support the theory that you can use the input shaft from the 249 as long as the gear cut is the same. That's good to know because that's the one your jeep's been running with since it was made.

I also found out that the WJ cases don't have the VSS sensor in them.

Well, I just finished swapping in the 242 in the place of the 249 on my 97. Everything works as if it was a stock install. Thanks Desertfox for the link, and I will say it is a very good write up, has a lot of information.

Well, I guess we know how you spent YOUR Thanksgiving! I know a guy who's whole family eats turkey sandwiches in the woods while deer hunting! Women included!
