Default transfer case problem on 98 grand cherokee

Hi guys. I'm having a problem with my transfer case. I heard grumbling and vibration coming from the front area of the jeep so, we put it on the hoist with it running and the transfer case was very loud. I also noticed the 4 wheel drive display module now only shows the front wheels illuminated in 4 wheel drive position. I guess my questions are... do the 98s have a transfer case problem and could there be an actuator problem causing the display module to show the front wheels only to be illuminated? thanks

Welcome to CF!

If you have the infamous NP249 Quadratrac t/case (4HI-N-4LO), you probably have a viscous clutch problem. About the display module, I haven't a clue. My '97 only showed "4WD PART TIME" or "4WD LOW" (NP 242 Selectrac)

Hi Dave, I see your from the Syracuse area... I'm up near Ogdensburg. Anyway, We put the jeep on the hoist and checked wheel bearings then noticed how loud the transfer case was. I didn't know if the 242 can be faulty. it has 190 thousand on it

Small world! My ZJ was owned by 2 soldiers that were being deployed to the Gulf and had to sell it. It was very much abused and I should have known better. When it's pretty AND cheap, check it out!

Otherside, it may need a chain or a couple of bearings. The 242 is pretty easy to repair. Check out this link; http://jeepforum.com/forum/f13/trans...1-np242-685644. It's about swapping t/cases, but has a lot of good info on the internal workings.

ok guys, I got jeep stuck in the yard and put it in fulltime 4 wheel and it wouldn't engaged. I put it in 4 low and it came out as the front wheels engaged. would the transfer case be the sole problem or could the front differential be an issue. I'm waiting on a used transfer case from my local salvage yard when it dries up. thanks

On my 03 242 I had a similar problem, grumbling grinding loud popping noise from the transfer case. Only had about 90,000 on it. There's nylon sleeves on the shift forks in the transfer case, seems to be a common problem for them to fall off, not allowing full engagement of the 4wd. A junkyard case solved the problem

Default 99 Grand Cherokee Laredo full time 4 wheel drive

I had a terrible noise coming from under my Jeep I pulled the front drive shaft out thinking there was a problem there but they're still a very loud noise coming from the transfer case any ideas? I'm a carpenter not a mechanic I have no idea what type of transfer case or anything like that I only know the basics oil changes brakes Etc

99 with full time 4WD I believe is an NP247 t/case (Quadratrac) and I have no experience with it, so my suggestion to you is to find a good used one or find someone to repair it. It's pretty easy to change, only 6 bolts and a cable shift. It requires a special fluid though.
