^X2.
But it's also possible your '94 came with the 242 t-case. Does yours offer a 2WD position on the t-case shifter bezel?
NP242: Full Time transfer case used in XJ's and ZJ's. 2wd, 4 part time, 4 full time, and 4 low. The 4 full time feature is unique from the NP249 as it does not use a vicious coupler (what goes bad in the 249), but instead a mechanism similar to an open differential.
There's a round ID tag on the rearward facing side of it that has the number on it.
This is for reference to show the tag's location:

i have a 94 grand Cherokee limited 5.2L v8 my self all time 4x4 and 4low the tcase you have is the np242j witch will cost you alot of time and stress...switch to a 231j its better on your druve train

Wrong. The np242 is selectrac which means it has 2wd, 4wheel part time, 4 wheel all time, and 4 lo. The np248-9 is the AWD with 4 lo only. And it's not as simple as just trading them out.

NP 249 has 4 full time, neutral and 4 low. NP242 has 2wd, 4 high part time, 4 high full time, N and 4 low those were the only 2 options available in the 94 limited.

you have the 242j tcase ...i have the same set up as you do ...the 231j or the 242j will mount right to the trans ...iv dont the swop on 3 of my rigs...the 242j is a ok tcase for every day use but the 231j is a good tcase for you if your wanting swap over to a 4hi 4lo and part time 4x4....

I have the same jeep" the transfer case is a 249 J on mine,
took this 249 J out of a 1994 Jeep grand Cherokee limited 5.2 jeep abandoned years ago on the property. I took of the pan and inside a few flakes of metal no sludge. amazing, great frictions and steels.
i just replaced it. With another 249 J i had in a junk v on the property.

Does shifter need to be changed when swapping TC
Does the shifter in my jeep that goes to the 249 need to be replaced when I swap to a 231 or 242?
