Default transfer cas problem

i just bought a 94 ZJ with a 4.0 and a AW4 auto and a NP231 t case. For some reason the display is wrong next the shifter, it says 4hi-N-4lo. I know the np231 has 4 selections, 4hi-2hi-N-4lo. The problem is i dont think that the 2hi is not engadging all the way, at 60mph im hitting 4k rpms. All the others work though, even from going to nutraul to 2hi it does the same thing. I have checked the fluid for metallic like stuff and metal but it was clean, i also checked the linkage and it looked good. Any help would be appreciated....also the t case shifter has some play in forward and backward while in 2 hi and 4hi but none in Nutrual and 4lo. Thanks... im not to knowlegable on transfer cases so any help would be appreciated.

The 94 ZJ didn't come with an AW4 transmission, it should have a 42RE. There should be a round metal tag with the model number on the transfercase.

This is a good link to research numbers and years. However, it is by no means the final authority, your Jeep is, meaning you may have a Frankenstein'd Jeep on your hands. Dunno

The best and only way to verify is to look up her skirt and see what you find.

Correct its not. Before you go any further verify what transfercase u have . There is a round tag on the tc with the model # on it.

did the previous owner tell you it has a 231? or did you read the tag on the t-case? my guess is that you have the AWD np249 hints the display only having 4hi-N-4lo

The 231 was most likely swapped in but the indicator bezel was never changed. The transfercase lever should be all the way forward for 2wd.

Pick up yourself a 231 bezel and be glad it was something so simple.
