Yeah there's alot to consider with that issue. I've been thru it, not really fun chasing the issue. I did resolve my problem with a replacement pcm but that was after changing the pressure sensor transducer... (Sounds like something from back to the future).. in my trans, and a fluid change, but that wasn't my issue as it turned out. Turned out someone put the wrong pcm in my jeep and it wasn't communicating correctly with my trans

Welcome to CF!
Back to the Future? Oh yeah! Since the WJ model was introduced (99), the engine control systems all work on a Can-Bus system where all the modules "talk" to one another, that is, send information on a 2-way data bus. This was supposed to eliminate miles of wiring and make system reaction quicker, but it sure makes it difficult for the average mechanic to work on it! The PCM is "Central Command" and actually has the computing power of a laptop, based in a preset program for the vehicle. It has a certain amount of learning ability, but is limited by it's basic parameters. If you're the type of driver that jumps on the throttle every time you take off, the PCM learns to dump a lot of fuel on takeoff, but still maintains mixture levels for normal cruising. In other words, it learns your habits. When the battery is disconnected for awhile, it looses this memory and must re-learn it.
The newer the model, the more complex it gets. Now even the transfer case is controlled by a selector switch! You can learn a lot by going to wjjeeps.com It will tell you all about the different models, options, and even how to take the jeep apart inside the cabin.
