Tranmission problem

Engine: 4.0L Straight 6
Tranmission problem
So,
My wife has a 2001 Grand Cherokee Laredo. The other day she was driving to and stopped at a job to post a reality sign. She turned off her car and when she came back she turned it on and when she started driving her car would not shift out of the lower gears (Automatic transmission). It just revs very high. The car goes into reverse. She says there was no signs before this happen that anything was wrong. We took it to a tranny shop and their estimating 1800$ to fix it saying that they'll most likely have to rebuild the tranny.
ANY HELP IS appreciated. has 140k miles on it.
