It needs to be level so that it tracks properly when towed and in any turns. I have used a drop hitch upside down in the receiver to make trailers level before when towed behind my Ford E-250 High Top Conversion Van. It sits low and even my race car trailer has to be done that way to level it out.

If you check, I believe he's from Missouri. What he's telling you is just common sense IF you've done any towing yourself.

I found this break away safety cable, anyone use it? for less than 100 bucks it might be good insurance although it might also be a real pain to install.

ya, we get taxed a lot here. just to share a story, a buddy of mine who owned a shop not only had to pay a business tax, but also a tool tax along with a few other taxes. so he was taxed when he purchased the tools, taxed for his business, and then taxed for the tools he needed to run his business, which the state made money on from his sales. in addition to all the taxes he was inspected about 2-3 times a month by regulatory agencies. he did a quick calc and determined if he left the state and only did 30% of the business he currently had he would make the same money. most of his business was mail order anyway, so he moved out of state and actually makes more now. just to add, California is now considering a driving mileage tax (I am actually part of the test group) to make more money to pay for the roads. they want to capture the gas tax they have not been collecting on electric or fuel efficient vehicles even though they kept pushing the population to use those types of vehicles. what they neglect to tell the population is that for years the state has diverted the road tax to other government programs. so the people that pay the tax and actually use the roads do not benefit as intended. I could go on and on about other stupid taxes and policies they have here but its just depressing. The wife and I are looking forward to when we can move to another state. anyway, sorry to get off topic. back to jeeps!

What's wrong with a good old high strength chain? Why build a better mousetrap?

NY is right behind CA when it comes to taxes. Most of the industry has moved out because of that and high power costs. Syracuse is pushing for tourism. Good luck with that! There's nothing to see here folks! Onondaga Lake is the most polluted body of fresh water since Love Canal! They're trying to clean it up and have opened it up to limited fishing. I wouldn't eat anything that came out of that cesspool! There's an airplane somewhere in the mud in the bottom of that lake and they can't find it! There's about 200 feet of mercury saturated mud in there.

How do you plan on connecting a tow bar to the Jeep?

There are different types of tow bars, some have a crossmember that's part of the tow bar.

What you need to do is create a triangle with cross-member for the tow bar to work correctly. Without a cross-member (part of the base plate, tow bar or hd bumper) you run a risk of damaging the sub-frame.

If you have a hd non-stock bumper the Harbor Freight tow bar should work ok.

With torch and welder you can create your own base plate with cross-member (out of square bar and metal plate). installed to the either side of the sub-frame near where the stock bumper connects.

I once found a Roadmaster stow-a-way type tow bar with cross-member rated @ 5000 lbs at a garage sale for $75.00. RV shops often have better quality used ones (Roadmaster, Blue Ox, etc) , cost is usually more than a hundred dollars. Have seen good deals on Craigslist.

I wouldn't want to connect a tow bar to a stock bumper. They're not strong enough to work for towing.

Safety cables are usually around 3/8" or better, often are plastic coated. I've made my own out of cable that are better than the ones normally sold in stores. Chain works as well, cable type easily wrap around the tow bar.

Jon, that breakaway cable is for use with a specific towbar braking system, Readybrake. Won't work by itself.

Hey guys thanks for the info. Here are some photos I took while making a few finnal adjustments. I originally installed the front camera as a way to see the trail my hood was blocking but as I discovered it also helps to aline the tow bar. I use the safety chain to hold the bar up as I drive to the tow vehicle looking at the camera to line up the hitch making it a one person operation.

If you want to make your travels more comfortable and exciting, how about taking your car with you? With the right towbar, you can be sure. Simply plug this tool into the back of your RV, plug in your vehicle and you're good to go.
Smittybilt rightly deserves its place on my list with its handy adjustable hitch kit. I particularly liked the 2" hitch coupled with the universal brackets used to release and secure the vehicle to the hitch.
I like the fact that the hitch can be adjusted to fit different types of bumper widths.

The best bet for what your after is like mine and use a trailer both ways as many things happen that 192.168.100.1 192.168.1.1 will render it not road worthy not just engine running or driveline.
