i have a 2001 gc with the select trac and an automatic. The owners manual says it can be towed 4 down but not with 2 wheels off the ground (with a dolly). I have seen guys on other forums say that they have put theirs on a dolly, transfer case in neutral, transmission in park and no driveshaft disconnect and towed for years. Why does jeep say don't do it ?

I don't see any reason why the NP242 Selectrac can't be towed with the front 2 up and t/case in neutral. It's NP247 Quadratrac that shouldn't be towed except flat and even then for short distances.

If you're going to tow across the country, I'd take the rear shaft out.

AAA will not tow any jeep. Only flatbed.

Thanks for the reply dave. It looks like my Cherokee is pretty much the same as yours, just one model year apart. I have seen other posts that suggest removing the rear drive shaft also....but why? I'm not being argumentative I just would really like to know.

Because with the rear shaft in, you're spinning all the gears in the t/case, whether it's in neutral or not. The neutral position just disconnects it from the transmission. Over long periods of time, that can add unwanted wear on it. If the front shaft is stopped by being on a dolly, the chain is not moving and all the gear motion is thru the internal differential. Remember, driving it in 2wd, all the front drive parts are spinning, just not under power.
