Default Torque converter wont disengage at stop light

Hi all new here. Have a question, I have a 1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2L AWD. Transmission shifts fine except when I come to a complete stop the rpms keep dropping and if I shift to N then back to drive everything works again. Its like the torque converter is not disengaging or something. Any help would be great... Thanks Clint

Welcome to CF.
I'm not a trans expert, so I looked at the ZJ FSM, and copied the following to see if it applies, or could be of help.

DRAGS OR LOCKS UP
1. Fluid Level Low. 1. Check and adjust level.
2. Clutch Dragging/Failed 2. Air pressure check clutch operation
and repair as required.
3. Front or Rear Band Misadjusted. 3. Adjust bands.
4. Case Leaks Internally. 4. Check for leakage between passages
in case.
5. Servo Band or Linkage Malfunction. 5. Air pressure check servo operation
and repair as required.
6. Overrunning Clutch Worn. 6. Remove and inspect clutch. Repair as
required.
7. Planetary Gears Broken. 7. Remove, inspect and repair as
required (look for debris in oil pan).
8. Converter Clutch Dragging. 8. Check for plugged cooler. Perform
flow check. Inspect pump for excessive
side clearance. Replace pump as
required.

TORQUE CONVERTER LOCKS UP
IN SECOND AND/OR THIRD GEAR
Lockup Solenoid, Relay or Wiring
Shorted/Open. Test solenoid, relay and wiring for
continuity, shorts or grounds. Replace
solenoid and relay if faulty. Repair wiring
and connectors as necessary.

Could be as simple as a bad stop light switch.

Is that the same as a brake light switch? If so my brake lights work fine is there some wire from this switch going to the transmission? Can I test with a ohm meter?

The stop light switch turns the brake lights on, shut off the cruise control, and tells the ECM to unlock the torque converter. There are about seven wires that go to and come out of the switch.

Yes i found them there were 6 now what do i do with them? If it were yours what would you do to test fix the problem? One other thing I noticed was it was having problems down shifting. When I gave it gas it would down shift to the proper gear and move on otherwise it would stay in the higher gear and just bog along. I would have to push the gas about half way and it would down shift and get up and go.

I wouldn't waste my time testing the old one, I would just replace it. But you're not sure if that is the problem or not. I suggest having a transmission shop check it out.

X2. A reputable trans shop will probably drive it and diagnose it for free.
