Hi, I was looking into getting a 99 Grand Cherokee Limited with a v8 4.7L engine.

It has low miles. Has a ticking noise from a valve...The guy said his mechanic looked at it and said it needed a new motor....

However, I called my personal mechanic (who is phenomenal) and he said 'not to tell the guy, but if it is what he thinks it is, i'm looking at about a $250 fix'....that it is a very common problem....

Seller said it has an 03 engine .... The 4.7L HO Vin J


So is this ticking noise from the valve a common issue and not that big of a deal....I mean the noise was noticeable but it wasn't like a loud rod knock type of noise...Just a ticking....like the sound of repeating the letter T: "T, T, T, T, T....."

OR SHOULD I RUN AWAY FROM THIS SWEET DEAL?

Those early years 4.7's had an issue with the oil holes becoming clogged causing excess wear on the cam lobes/rockers. It can become so severe that rocker arms can fall off causing a loud knocking noise. There are videos of this on you tube. >
