Throttle body? ?
 

I want to clean my throttle body because my Jeep is feeling sluggish. I have done a full tune up champ plugs belden wires cap rotor, headers full exhaust upgrade, rebuilt trans 1 month ago k&n intake kit, new fuel pump/filter. A couple weeks back it ran great now it seems to have lost power.
I-6 with 267,000 miles

Any suggestions? Or downside to cleaning throttle body? Will I have to reset computer?

Cleaning the throttle body won't restore the lost power. Do a compression test and a cylinder leak down test, your engine may be tired and showing its age. You also have to remember the weather was cooler a couple weeks ago and cooler weather will have a slight effect on how the engine runs.

Are these tests I can do at home or do I need to take to a shop? I'm no tech but pretty good at putting stuff back together.

Also I agree at so many miles it is showing its age, but what can I do about that? Do I have to reduild? Kind of on a family budget.

Get a FSM for your Grand, then go to the parts store and rent the compression tester. The FSM will show you how to do the test. People like to clean the throttle body, some will bore it out, and they will swear it helps them in horsepower and response. I have no idea if it does or doesn't, but you can't go wrong with the test's.

I have a plan for mine. I'm going to get an engine from the local pik-n-pull for 150 bucks and build it as I can afford it while nursing my original engine. Once I have it built and ready, I'll swap it out over a weekend.
You can do a compression test at home if you have the tester, some autoparts places will have them for rent. A leak down test requires an air compressor and a little know how. A compression test only requires you to screw the tester into the spark plug hole after removing all 6 plugs, disable the ignition, prop the throttle open and crank the engine over for about 8 seconds. Record all of the results and compare them. I think the spec is 175psi and all cylinders should be within10% of eachother.
Another thing to check is to see if you have a clogged exhaust. A clogged cataylitic convertor will kill horsepower big time. Any muffler shop can check it out for you for cheap.

What specs would I need to swap and engine. I like the idea of pick n pull and build slowly. How do I make sure I get the correct engine? Dumb question but when I researched the trans there were quite a few different ones. Also if you get a used engine how do you go about rebuilding? Where could I find step by step instructions?
