Question Thoughts on mixing oil viscocities?

Hi all,

I'm interested in anyone's thoughts on mixing oil weights. Specifically, 5W and 10W-30. Running 5W-30 Mobil 1 now going into the winter, but I know the engine calls for 10W-30. 157K, no leaks, doesn't burn a drop. All suggestions welcome.
PS: Calls for 6 quarts, but the dipstick reads high (over the safe mark currently, what gives?)

Mobil 1 5w30 is perfect all year long. No need to to change. I run 5w30 in all my vehicles and they all have over 100K on them one has over 200K and no issues ever. I wouldn't change a thing if I were you.

Any thoughts on why the dipstick reads high?

Too much oil? Ha! Also depends on where you live. If it gets below freezing for several months you want 5w. If it's 100 degrees for several months you might want 10w.

This might have nothing to do with you, but my wife had a Dodge Caravan that read high because SOMEONE used a jack on the oil pan! She bought it before I looked it over. It wasn't leaking, but had a big dent in it.

The purpose for multi-grade oil is so you don't have switch it season to season.

Put in 6 quarts, and it reads just above the "SAFE" mark. 6 quarts is what it calls for. Going to change it today and will put in 5.5 and see what happens. Will add as needed if necessary. More to come.

Calls for 6 quarts, going to back it off a bit with today's change.

Is Dip stick reading High before or after you start it and let it run through the oil filter?

Filter size also makes a difference. Valvoline uses a small diameter long filter and the Mopar filter is a large diameter short one. I know the large GM filter holds almost a quart. Just saying.

Runs high before I run it (check it cold).

A Mopar was on it. For my most recent oil change this weekend, I used a K& N HP2004, which I had great luck with on my 01 XJ years ago. Put in 5 quarts, 15 oz. Still seems to read a bit high, but all seems well and pressure is good, reading about 55-60 while driving and just above 40 while idling.

Ok, don't over think this. Drain oil. Use a napa gold 1515, wix 51515 or Purolator l30001. Get 7 qts oil. Put 6.5 qts in. You'll be good. Mobil 1 5-30 is thin so it may leak on you slightly. But Mobil 1 is great oil
