Terrible mpg in my gc 2011
 

Hello guys like the tittle say I'm having terrible mpg in my gc 2011 I'm getting 9mpg in city I don't drive much in highway I used to get 11 -12 mpg now I'm barely getting 9 mpg what could be wrong.
It's a 2wd v6 jeep grand Cherokee 2011 with 50k miles

as far mileage have no clue, but a 5000lb car being pushed around by an anemic 3.6L engine won't get good mileage no matter what you do

My dad has a 2013 or 2014 "4x4" and gets 30 mpg highway, this guy probably has a problem.

Driving habits?Maybe it needs a tune up or has the engine light on ?

Yeah, my 2008 3.7 4x4 gets 13.4 and I think thats bad. Just around town driving for me. Does it seem like its running ok?

No engine lights on and it runs fine as far as I can tell .
I know it's a v6 I'm wondering what mpg u guys get because 9mpg is ridiculous.

I only drive around town. Should I take it to the shop or is normal mpg for this car

Depending on your locale, are you spending lots of time warming it up? That will cut significantly into your fuel mileage. Just ask me.

9mpg does sound excessive.
Take it for a diagnostic check & find out if there are any fault codes.
My 2000 WJ 4.0 does around 13.8mpg on mainly short runs but I've had 23mpg on a long run.

My 2008 GC limited with the 5.7 hemi gets shot 10/11 mpg as of now and I used to get a few more mpg. I have noticed recently that it's lower than usual. Would oxygen sensors being bad have anything to do with this? I have also noticed my tail pipe is blacker and it shows signs that I'm burning more fuel than usual?

It may just need some new spark plugs. Constant in town driving with no open road running will foul the plugs pretty quick. Take it for an interstate run at 75 mph for fifty or more miles and see if it improves your mileage, that will clean the plugs up somewhat and also blow out the cat converter some. edit to add. I would put some name brand injector cleaner or stp or lucas oil fuel treatment in the gas tank before running it down the interstate to help clean the carbon our of the cylinder heads etc. a lot better. I would also count the shifts on the tranny to make sure it is going into high gear and overdrive when at operating speed.

yes. The O2 Sensor will definitely cause poor fuel mileage. Its in part how the ECU decides how much fuel to inject.

Those short wide tires aren't doing you any favors on fuel economy.

Our stock XJ will get 22 mpg out on the highway, but sometimes less than 10 mpg driving around locally short trips in mud and snow, cold starts and lots of idling.

I don't know about the thermostat but it never gets up to 210* unless the electric fan fails and it's overheating.

Those numbers seem a bit low for a WK2 GC with the 3.6L engine. Our '14 WK2 has 161k miles with the 3.6L V6 and 4WD, and we easily get 25 MPG with mostly highway driving. You should be getting at least 15 MPG in the city according to the EPA. Yes, city MPG will always be worse than highway MPG due to all the stop-and-go.
