Default temperature gauge stopped working

any ideas on how to troubleshoot where the problem is? Where exactly is the sensor at? Would it just be easier to install a new aftermarket gauge?
All of this happened after a thorough cleaning of the undercarriage.

Plz help a clueless noob

On your 4.0L equipped ZJ the sensor is at the rear of the engine near/next to the valve cover on the drivers side, according to the manual.
See if there's any moisture in the connector.

it's a start, thanks! Finally mastered the ins and outs of the ******' engine but these "modern" Jeeps are a little more complicated.

OK, problem solved then! For some reason my "better" half really thinks that the temp sensor is somewhere on the front of the engine and that broken thing is something else. I'll tell him AGAIN that this is what needs fixing. I'm like "dude, that doodad-a-mabob is obvisously broken and your temp gauge stopped registering, put 2 and 2 together". I guess I just stumped him with my overly-technical terminology

i don't mean to hijack this thread but I have the same problem, so I went and bought the sensor and tried to install it and what do you know I could only find the wire that seemed to have been broken off because some of the old sensor was still on there. So I put my new sensor on it, but I can't find where it goes???? I've looked to see if mat have been broken off but I don't see anything. I took some pics of where it should be.

Default Temp gauge dead!

I have a 95 jeep grand Cherokee. the temp gauge doesn’t work, I replaced the coolant temp sender switch with no avail, (that's the one with one wire by the firewall) also put a new instrument cluster but the problem continued, so I ruled out the Gauge as a culprit, i grounded the sending switch unit wire as a test turn the key on without starting the vehicle and the gauge goes all the way up only when I hit the brake pedal,( it was supposed to go up by itself) also all fuses seem normal, it is really strange, I have no more ideas anything will be appreciated

Okay, AFAIK the '97 only uses the temp sensor that's screwed into the thermostat housing. The older ones had one that screwed into the rear of the head. When I put a new head on my '00 WJ, that plug was there and hadn't been tightened but was painted over. I wasn't looking for it so I had a coolant leak. From what I've just read, it appears the '94 had the rear one and the '97 doesn't. I'm thinking if you have the electrical connector but no drilled plug hole, someone changed the head.

Easiest answer? install a separate temp gauge. OR you could extend the wiring to reach the front hole.

I am new to forum 2/15/2023, I have 1998 jeep cherokee sport, 4.0 , The temperature gauge does not move , I turn key to on , or when starting .
I cannot find this other sensor in back of engine by firewall that everyone mentions .. If this year does not have the temperature sending sensor ,what is the fix for the temperature gauge not moving , all other gauges on dash are fine
