You might have to swap the input depending on what year the cases came off of but it's doable.

the np231 tcase is off a 90 5sp 4.0ho and the np242 is off a 92 auto 4.0ho which would be easier?

the 90 is a non h.o.
but regardless, either way, you'll have to swap out the input shafts.

also, you may have to swap out the speedo gear/mechanism.

but either one should be just as doable as the other. i would go with the 231, but only depends on how you want to build the jeep for what purpose in the end.

The 242 will have the same spline count but may have a different length. If I had to choose it would be the 231, much more aftermarket support and no diff inside to go out.
