Surging idel question
Hello I’m a new Cherokee owner 2000’ GC 4.7L with 150k miles. Really enjoy driving it. Do have a slight problem that I’m thinking might be TPS but would like some confirmation. When I start it (hot or cold) it immediately shoots up to about 2k RPM’s then slowly drops to about 800 but surges a bit… upto about 1,000. Is it safe to assume it’

I have a 2002 Grand Cherokee with the 4.7 and 114,000 miles that is doing the same thing. My cruise control stopped working around the same time.

Old fart with a wrench
Check for a vacuum leak, such as the MAP sensor hose or other vacuum source like the CCV. I believe the IAC is sensing the extra air and trying to compensate. That's the Idle Air Control.

my 04 does that and at times has surging rpms on the road. also when cold takes awhile to grab overdrive. when surging on road I stomped gas to floor for a couple secs and it stopped... 200 miles later it occurred again. did it again and it stopped. parts guy says I'm on right track with TPS. The TPS and AIC are interconnected with the computer so will clean AIC and change TPS

cruise made my rpm surging occur til I stomped gas to the floor for a sec and it stopped. ( I quit using cruise in my long trip then). tps and aic are interconnected to tranny and engine brainbox.
