you can use the high level inputs on an amp to power a sub. you'll just have to tap into existing speaker wires. I don't, but maybe someone on here has the wire diagram for the factory amp so you can pull from under the seat instead of going into the doors.

they sell a low level converter, which hooks into regular speaker leads and has RCA outs. I was just saying to buy an amp that has high level inputs and splice into your speaker leads. use the amp you buy to power your subs the stock amp will be powering your door speakers.

Here is a link to information that might help you. I have a 94, but maybe you can find your year on here.

I would disconnect the sub immediately that is VERY hard on that factory amp.

Just go buy a 2 channel Line-Out converter, slice in to the door speakers (right and left; so your balance and fade still work), and hook an amp up from that RCA signal.

PM me if you have any questions. I may be a newbie to Jeeps, but not car audio.

the hi/lo converter is the better way to do it, but the best way to do it is to just replace the head unit itself. if you're picky about sound the way i am. the sound that comes from stock radios just is not meant for aftermarket stuff.

I disagree. This is true if you just want to do the bare minimum. I pesonaly have a really nice setup in my VW, and have the factory headunit. I pull the signal to the Rockford 360 and it does all the work. A signal is a signal; it might be more powerful but if your just going to an amp who cares.

Lots of people in the SQ world want to keep the Factory HU because it has a cleaner look. I am personally one of them.

NOW... In the case of my "NEW" 98 Jeep I will be going after market, because I want more stereo features (import).

The "right way" is the go to the large loom under the dash (driver side) and spice into the 12V line there. It will be the thick wire in that loom more than likely (yellow or red possibly). Make sure to test it with the car on and off.

OR

Do it the easy way and spice off your cigarette lighter (I believe they don't work unless the car is on).

And for testing purpose you can take a small piece of wire and connect the battery terminal on the Amp to the remote on the Amp... Just to make sure you got it all hooked up properly.
