steering wheel cruise control lights - am i going mad??

steering wheel cruise control lights - am i going mad??
Hello all,
I have a 2003 (52 plate) WJ Jeep Grand Cherokee. I noticed recently that the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel stopped illuminating at night so I took it into my local dealership who are pretty good at sorting these things for me.
They told me that the cruise control buttons on the steering wheel arent meant to illuminate and they never have, am I going crazy?!! I can swear they used to light up when you put the lights on.

Old fart with a wrench
They did on my Dodge Caravan. They don't on my 97 ZJ or my 00 WJ. I don't like it because the feeling in my fingertips isn't the greatest. Very hard at night on the highway.
