Starting problems
I'm having starting problems with my 04 Grand Cherokee. It was an intermittent problem, mostly when the engine had been running, but now won't start at all. I turn the key and the starter doesn't engage--no crank, no clicks, but the electrics all work(lights, radio, windows, etc.) When it does start, it runs great--no problems at all.
I got a P1685 code (invalid SKIM key, I think) so I thought I needed the keys reprogrammed. Took it to the dealer, they diagnosed and replaced the SKIM module and the keys. I took it home, but still have the same problems.
Now I get a P1698 code (no CCD/J1850 message from the TCM, I think)
Took it back to the dealer, they diagnosed more, and told me that somehow the starter is sensing that the transmission isn't in park or neutral, so won't engage.
I talked to an out-of-state mechanic friend who did a little internet research and said it may be the transmission range sensor. I told that to the dealer and they said they checked that but it wasn't the problem.
Now the dealer tells me they want to replace the transmission valve body (which includes the transmission range sensor) and TCM for $1700. This sounds like bs to me. Anyone ever had or heard of this problem? I could really use some help...
Thanks
