Default Starter won't always engage when the key is turned in my 1995 jeep cherokee

The started doesn't always engage when the key is turned. Sometimes I will turn the key 10 times before the starter engages and then the jeep runs just fine.
That is the main issue.

Additionally, the starter will sometimes engage while the jeep is running in park or neutral if the key is too far forward in the ignition. Sometimes the jeep will try to start itsself when the key is removed without turning it all the way back.

I'm new to working on my vehicle but I am excited to learn about it all
Thank you for helping me!

Hey Martina, I'm having the same issue! My battery is new, I just changed the starter and this problem still persists. I wonder if it has something to do with the actual key ignition. Any has any insight to this?

Welcome to CF!

I'd say the ignition switch is at fault and needs to be replaced. At least you don't have to worry about the newer "chip" key. IDK about the older jeeps but you may have a separate switch and key tumbler so you don't have to re-key your ignition. You might want to check with a locksmith to see if this is true.

Initially, I was going to say to check your neutral safety switch by starting in neutral instead of park or by moving the shifter around when trying to start it, but it trying to start itself shows a bad ignition switch.

I had the same problem with my 93 ZJ. It was the switch it's self. The aluminum gets worn from use and it does strange things. You need a tamper proof torx to remove the switch. I just use the switch now to power everything and put a push button right beside the switch. cost 8 bucks.
