Starter Motor Service Life?

Old fart with a wrench
If you've cranked it long enough to flatten a battery many times and gotten it overheated, who knows. The one in my 2000 WJ 4.0 has 246K miles on it and still wings the engine over like it was new. However, the one in the 2000 XJ I just bought is new and the jeep only has 127K on it. "What kind of crazy question you asking me?" "Momma told me not to come!" Three Dog Night, 1970.

I think OEM starters last as long or longer than OEM alternators that usually get around ~150,000 - 200,000+ miles.
Possibly the solenoid goes bad and needs to be replaced. If the rotor and stator and in good shape all a starter may require is a complete rebuild kit ~$50.00, or possibly only requires a new set of brushes.
Alternator and starter parts, try https://www.aspwholesale.com/
The quality of OEM alterntors is better than most aftermarket alternators I think the same is true of Mopar OEM starters. Many of the OEM parts installed at the factory are built and designed to last at least ~125,000 miles.

It's not the miles that wears a starter out but the number for times it's been started. My previous job I drove 82 miles round trip, I started it to go to work and to come home. Now I drive 3 miles to work so I start it to go to work, to come home for lunch and to go back to work and once again to come home, that's 4 times in 12 miles compared to twice in 82 miles. I'll be replacing the starter with alot fewer miles when it needs to be replaced this time.

I left it out in my previous message, was going to add most starters wear out (as WJBill mentioned) from starting an engine again and again.
A starter problem can be only with the solenoid.
If a starter is regularly overheated it will wear out sooner. Also if it regularly run through water, mud, sand, salt, etc. Parts may wear or fail prematurely.
Also like alternators there are different build qualities. I find the OEM alternators to have a better build quality than most aftermarkets, however their cost is usually around ~$350.00. So people often purchase a new aftermarket, many of which are ok, but imo most aren't built to last (as an oem) using higher quality parts.
For the ZJ that recently woundn't turn over. I purchased a new Remy starter with a lifetime warranty reasonable priced ~$52.00, from Rockauto. The old starter doesn't appear to be OEM as it has no model/product number tags, nothing of where it's manufacture, etc. I'll need to dismantle to determine if it's worth the cost of rebuilding.
