Speedometer goes out randomly
I have a 93 Jeep Grand Cherokee and every once and a while the speedometer stops working and the check engine light comes on. I was wondering if someone could help me out. Thanks.

does it have a vehicle speed sensor?

It does have a vehicle speed sensor. It's on the left side of the tail housing on the transfercase. The locking tab on the electrical plug is really weak and the plug will lose contact. If the ECM doesn't see a signal from the VSS it will set a check engine light.

If your odometer still works then the VSS is ok. I had the same problem and it was the ckt board on the gauge cluster that was bad. I could have soldered the joints but bought a used cluster instead and replaced the board.

agree with iweb, cluster is more than likely the cause if the odometer is still working when his occurs

Depends who it goes out randomly with.

Not sure about a 93 but on my 95 you can pull the codes by turning the key on but not start three times rapidly and then wait. The CEL will flash. You must count number of flashes and then look it up on a code chart (found online by googling "trouble code for Grand Cherokee). This will give you a starting point. I also had the erratic speedo, but never caused running problems.
