Default Slight diff whine

Hi guys. I am in the UK looking at a 98 Grand Cherokee Orvis after selling my XJ The car has had a 2inch lift, and for the year is spot on. Really like it BUT...Drives as should but take foot of an on the over run, is a whine which appears from the rear. Now the seller is a genuine guy, (appears to be) & has had auto trans rebuilt, and rear diff also. He said he took it back and the fitter said all is fine, they all do that. Well I don't believe they do. Not sure what to do as a good price, and the car is so clean would be a good winter car here. any idea if normal or walk away? Thanks guys and best wishes out there. Les

My old XJ started whining just before I got rid of it, I think it ended up being a pinion bearing that went bad. And no, they don't all do that.

Good luck.

Thanks I guess I knew that, but shame is so clean. I have just turned it down
as price in sorting it would outweigh the car.
Cheers all Les

It's really a shame the fitter didn't get the pinion bearing preload correct and knew it and wasn't willing to fix it. Differential service is the most critical part of automobiles and must be done with finesse. It is actually harder to set up an axle than to rebuild an engine.

I know Dave. I rang the seller back last night, and he sounds a real genuine guy. He said he took the car in as the diff was making a dreadful noise. It was whining before hand. The garage(shop) changed the crown wheel as was breaking up bad, and some other bits. Paid him but still had the whine.
Took it back and the guy said, is fine just a slightly worn bearing but is safe, and saved you paying anymore WTF? so for a few quid (Bucks) more would have been 100% Shame, as I would have bought it, as fine in all other ways.
I am now looking at a 2002 V8 4.7 in Black. Looks immaculate, just waiting to go see it. Regards and thanks. Les . (anything to look for on this one?)
