Shift rpms
96 ZJ AWD Can someone tell me what rpms the tranny shifts to 2-3-4?-od? At a normal acceleration when does the tranny shift to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, od? Mine seems to shift 4 times to get in OD. There are 3 forward shift positons on the shifter. 1-2-D. It's not a selectra trac. Hi4-N-Lo4. Also what speed are you running at 2K rpms in OD? Not having driven a jeep long before my tranny prob, I'm not sure what to look for. It's shifting in all gears smoothly but I'd feel better knowing that it's normal compared to others. TIA

Shift RPM depends on throttle position, vehicle speed, and load, so it varies. My 95 4.0 runs at about 65mph @2000rpm, and with normal driving it shifts into overdrive at 45mph and then the torque converter locks shortly after. That fourth shift you're feeling is actually the torque converter locking.

Shift RPMs are all variable, and it will also depend on your gear ratios and tire sizes. But mainly the shift points are based on throttle valve pressure (1st-3rd) and TP sensor ( O/D & T/C lock up)
If you feel like its shifting too soon or too late in 1st-3rd you might look at the T/V cable adjustment. If it seems like O/D and T/C lock up are not right then it could be more complicated or maybe a TP sensor problem.
In "D" you should get these shifts, 1, 2, 3, O/D & T/C lock-up ( may feel like 5 shifts)
In "D" with O/D cancelled you get these shifts 1, 2, 3 & T/C lock-up ( may feel like 4 shifts)
T/C only locks up in 3rd gear if O/D button is pressed to cancel O/D.

Thanks, that explains a lot. Mine is 5,2 and at 65 it's a 2k and the other shifts are close to your 4.0. This makes me feel much better. Thanks again.
