Selec Trac Question
I bought an older XJ, and I think it was a mistake. I do 99% of my driving on road, and I think I want Selec Trac. 99.99% of the older XJs came with Command Trac (Part time). I'm not so sure about doing a 241 to 242 TC swap on mine.
The part about the XJ that appealed to me is that they have a reputation for (and do) go on forever. I routinely see them for sale with 200,000+ miles on them.
Is the newer GRAND cherokee as durable and easy to work on? It seems like the earlier GRANDs had the same straight 6 engine in them. and many more of them were sold with Selec Trac

I looked for a long time for an XJ with Selec Trac. They are out there if you search. And there are good write ups on doing a transfer case swap.
Ultimately, i picked a ZJ with the 4.0 6cyl and Selec Trac. It was in better shape than most of the XJs I looked at, and it had what I wanted on it. I like having a little more room inside and the coil suspension gives a better ride in my opinion.
The engine is the same as the XJ, but the transmission is different. I think there are a lot of similarities in simplicity of working on them. ZJ Limited models have more electronics and gadget stuff than can go bad over time, but most Limiteds were V8's anyway. Good luck in whatever you decide to do.

Old fart with a wrench
From most on my experience with the ZJ, the 4.0s came with Selectrac 242 as standard and the V8s came with the 249 as standard. That's what I see in the junkyard for the most part. I also see many ZJs with the 242 missing.
Most of the XJs are the 231, if I'm not mistaken.

My collective experience is moving in the same direction. I should have bought a no-frills ZJ with the straight 6 and selec trac
The ZJs have a really weak transmission though (from what I hear anyway)
Do ZJs rot as bad as XJs ??
