rear wheels binding?? - newbie - please help
Hi, I am very new to 4x4's and have just bought a 1997 Grand Cherokee and it's the Orvis model. Ive noticed a judder/notchy feel from the rear wheels it's like the rear wheels are being held. It doesn't ever happen when the car is
cold though, only after a good drive and everything's warmed up. At slow speeds reversing into spaces or pulling away from stationary with the front wheels turned either way it's as though the rear wheels have the brakes applied, when the steering wheel straightens it goes away.
Please can someone give me a clue to the problem.
This car was only bought as a little work horse but I love it so hopefully it's not going to be too expensive to fix
Thanks
Rich

thanks for replying, sorry but its all new to me. i dont know if i have a limited slip diff.... how can i tell?
its permanetly 4WD and it all seems to work very well, just when its all warmed up and i turn the steering wheel the rear wheels seem to lock a bit, they ease up again when the steering is straight. only noticable when parking or 3 point turning etc.

Most likely a bad tcase. U can try to change the fluid and see what happens. I wouldnt worry about replacing that seal yet till you see if a fluid change helps.

Right, I've had a look and I do have a LSD in the rear as I found the metal tag on the case but I couldn't find a tag on the front one.
So I'm going to change the oil in the rear and add the additive and see how that goes
Probably not til next week end though

You won't find an LSD on the front. You need an open diff for turning. Try changing the rear diff fluid and adding a friction modifier. Sounds like the clutch plates are sticking.

How much additive is needed? I'm getting lots of different amounts quoted online so I phoned a service yard near me and they said 250ml if not towing or 500ml if towing. I will be towing so 500ml I suppose.
Is this correct?

I just bought a tube and put the whole tube in, never noticed the size. I think it cost me $8 at Napa.

FYI Quadra trac vehicles have the hydra-lock posi units in both the frontend and rearend. These are known for chatter issues when the clutches wear out. The bad news is they're not rebuildable since no internal parts are available. You either have to replace it with another hydra-lock or switch out the posi for a standard Trac-lok or open diff but that will require replacing the axle shafts as well. I would first try adding a bottle of LSD additive to the rear first before jumping the gun at a full on replacement. For the additive depending on the brand it varies, mopar/ford/dana/Yukon (they are all the same) additive is 1 4oz bottle per diff (this is for diffs using about 2 quarts or less).

FYI, the LSD additive is the friction modifier I spoke of earlier.
Also, I don't think the 97s had QuatraTrac.
