Rear hatch 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The rear hatch of my 2004 Jeep Cherokee will not lock. I can lock it manually. I intermittently hear the locking mechanism engage, but the lock does not engage. What can I do to repair this?

I'd start by taking the hatch panel off and seeing what the mechanism is doing/not doing when you try locking it.
