Rear end identification

Looking for some help indentifying this rearend on my sons 1997 2wd Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. It says Dana on the fill cap but there are no numbers on the tabs or anywhere else on the rear end. Anyone know for sure which one this is? |
Looks to be a dana 44a

Not the regular one. 1996–2004 ZJ/WJ Grand Cherokee (aluminum center section, referred to as the 'D44A')o

Is the 44a different than a standard 44 internally? I need to get a rebuild kit but I dont see anything for a 44A specifically. All I see is 44 or 44HD. |

I think the Dana 44a may be referred to as the Dana 44 HD I could be wrong though.

AND...it's no way an HD! It's fragile and the case can widen enough to change the gear lash if you whomp on it. The D44 is much stronger. You'll need a case spreader to set the carrier bearing preload.
