Rear Axle removal
I'm having trouble getting the rear axle out of my 96 Grand Cherokee. I have taken the four nuts off of the brake assembly plate and its loose. I've tried a slide hammer to pull it out but it doesn't seem to be moving. Is there something else I need to take apart or what? Thanks for your time.

I'm pretty sure they're held in with c-clips in the diff center section. Pull the diff cover, remove the lock bolt in the diff., pull the retaining pin, remove the spider gears, push in on the axle, and using a magnet remove c-clip from groove in inner end of axle. Axle should pull out now. I think I've got that right. IIRC

Thank you so much for the advice. I got my axle out and it is the type that uses the c-clip. I think this is a dana 44. I don't know if its a dana 44a or a dana 44 but the diagrams online of a dana 44 is what mine looks like. Now I have to replace the oil seal and I am stuck again. When I tried to pull it out it wouldn't budge and after mangling it I cleaned up the oil to find no visible seam. Does anybody know if that old seal is supposed to come out to be replaced or do I put the new seal over top of the old seal ( which I would think unlikely but who knows.) I even used channel locks with enough pressure to rip a chunk out of the old oil seal. Any advise would be appreciated for this non-mechanic. Thank you The jackleg mechanic WulfGSXR

If it's the original axle it's a D44A. As for seal replacement, I can't help you except to say that the old seal has to come out. There may be a special tool, or a tip that someone can give you as far as removing/installing the seal.

Thank you old blue, your advice was key. It was exactly like you described. The project is done and to any body else removing an axle and replacing oil seals be sure when you go to the auto store you should know what type or rear end you have. I have a dana 44 rear and the auto stores gave me dana 35 parts ( oil seal and cover gasket.) Thanks again for the help.
