Is there any smarty-pants way to read the mileage without an instrument cluster/odometer. I am at the pick-n-pull looking for a 4.0 long block to replace mine and there's a 97 Grand Cherokee here which has what I want but instrument cluster has already been pulled.

With a proper scan tool you can the mileage from the PCM.

What sort of scan tool do I need? My understanding is that odometer can't be read from OBD-II. Is there a scan tool that will connect to the CCD bus?

I used to do with the Chrysler DRBII twenty years ago. Since I haven't worked at a dealership for two decades I have no need to verify a vehicles mileage. Do you plan on freshening the motor up a little before installing it?

Not really, I was hoping to just drop it in and go. At this point it's mostly just to satisfy my own curiosity and to have some hard numbers to go with the vehicle when I end up selling it. Maybe I can find a dealership with the tool and ask them to read the mileage for me.

Check the oil and pull the valve cover,If the oil is clean and the top end of the engine is slugged up it should be good to go.
