No not the kind with the big stereo system!
I took a video of what sounds like a bad lifter or cam. (If it is then I'll put a better cam and lifters in)
Put a scope to the valve cover and injectors and all accessories and all sounds fine there.
I'll be dammed but the thing runs good and started this after I took the water they called oil in it out and replaced with good oil.
It's not as loud as the video makes it. I had the camera up close to the engine.

It's lifter till, my ZJ has developed the same thing after I changed oil brands. As long as it runs fine it's ok when you start loosing power than fix it. It's real common in a lot of the 4.0's.

I mean if I'm going to sound like a diesel then I want a diesel
I don't know what was in there for oil but I can sure tell you it was thin and like water.
I put 5qts of AZ brand in there just to clean it out then I was going to use my Mobil 1 but the rap came along and I put 1qt of Lucas in there.
The cap and rotor and plugs looked like heck also and I took the stock shocks off and I bet the rear diff is almost dry judging by the leak and slight howl.
The previous owner sure wasn't much on maintainence.
Now the White 95 came from a service freak! The only thing I found it needs is a belt.
He didn't even put in a J/Y steeering box, he put new in it.

well its a bit tough to say but to me that deep sound is more like a rod bearing. One thing about rod bearings is they generally only get worse then come out and show you exactly which one it is. Hope I'm wrong and it just a lifter. I am not really a pesismist normally, but I like to examine the worst case then go to the better stuff.

And it doesn't change tone under load.
I'm considering a stroker motor just in case. (Excuse to justify buying new engine)
