Pump for changing fluids
 

-thought I would share this experience as a tip/trick-


sometimes changing out fluids is a pain so rather than using my Harbor Freight hand pump (or turkey baster) I picked up an electric pump off ebay (see link below). I tested it by changing out the oil on my Honda generator and it worked pretty good, which is usually messy due to the design. I pumped the old oil out and new oil in with little trouble. It could also be used to change out power steering fluid, diff fluid, trans fluid, or anything else that is not easy to change on our jeeps.


the down side is you will need to pick up a 12v transformer or make a set of wires that connect to the pump and to your battery in addition to the unit. you also need to pick up hoses, which can be purchased by the foot at a local hardware store. I had a small bench battery I used to test the unit but will eventually permanently connect a 12v transformer so I can plug it into an outlet. for 7 bucks its a cheap investment.

Don't forget a rectifier for your DC supply! I still have a nice 12 volt, 20 amp DC supply that I had on my CB base radio when that was the thing.

Many of those really should not be just "Pumped Out" instead of the proper way of doing them outlined in the owners manual. The differentials need to have the covers pulled at least once a year to inspect the gears/lockers and for metal in the bottom. But if you run in water, mud or lots of snow you need to check them even more often because of water build-up inside.


I have aftermarket covers on my XJ that have drain and fill plugs because of its use I change the fluid often and pull the covers twice a year. On my WJ it is changed once a year at the Jeep dealership I use to have everything checked on it gone over. I would rather pay the $100 just for piece of mind as the person doing the work has been there for over 19 yrs,
