Pulling bushes with my Cherokee?
 

I have several stubborn boxwood bushes I need to get out. Today, I hooked up a tow strap to my hitch on my 2003 Grand Cherokee. I broke 2 straps and only managed to get the bush a little sideways. I finally got that bush out with a high lift jack, but that was a lot of work. My question is, if I use a heavy chain, how much force can the hitch/frame of my Jeep take attempting to pull out a bush before it causes damage to the hitch/frame? http://www.jeepforum.com/ubb/thumbs.gifhttp://www.jeepforum.com/ubb/thumbdown.gif?

I wouldn't yank with chain, something else will break. Steady pressure and your wheels will spin before any damage is done.
Loosen all the dirt and roots around the bushes with shovel.
Use blocks next to bush to drape the chain over. Will give a more upwards pull.

Absolutely! Never yank with a chain! My brother almost died doing that! He was trying to get his friend out of a ditch with his Chevy pick-up and he had no tailgate. The chain came off the tow and came thru his rear window just missing his head, spraying glass all over! He had enough time to turn his head or he would have been blinded.

If there's some way that you can change the force on the bushes to a vertical rather than horizontal, they should come out much easier. Times like these I'm glad I have friends with front end loaders.

Success!!! I used a heavy chain and they came out with no problem. I used the chain over a wheel on one bush, but don't think I even needed the wheel. The chain works 100x better than a tow strap that stretches and snaps. Also, wrapping the chain twice around the base of the bush helped a lot by letting it cinch up around and hold onto the bush better. Thanks for all of the suggestions, guys!
