Power windows - stuck open, with rain coming
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start testing for power windows, after the circuit breaker has been replaced?
94 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo, 5.2L V8
Power Windows have been having issue intermittently, but turning off the engine, restarting it, and then putting seat belt on, and then retrying windows has worked until last night. (Last night I had hazards on and was opening & shutting various doors while replacing a blow-out on the side of the highway.) Now, I cannot get the windows to do anything, and then are partially down.
I've tried all the window switches, but none are working, including the main panel on the driver's side door.
Where should I start testing? I already replaced the circuit breaker for them.
Thanks for any suggestions. I'm trying to beat the storm that is expected for next 2 days.

Good answer!
I jury rigged it for tonight - Home Depot for some 4mil plastic and no residue duct tape. I'll take it to a garage tomorrow. Trying to trace wires in 90* F full sun with sweat dripping in my eyes was not cutting it. ;-)

if you take the door panel off disconnect all the wires peel off the black plastic then cut off the clear plastic you should be able to grab the window..then connect the door and hit the up button while pulling or pushing up on the glass, an extra pair of hands would be helpful then you can trace wires and you your window will least be up in the mean time

Hi Ricky,
Thanks! I might try that later. It's all 4 windows though, so I'm thinking it's either the master control switch on driver's door or something in body harness somewhere. Are there any body harness modules I can test as mid-points? Or do you know where there are schematics available online?

I tried the window lock, yes. I'm thinking maybe it is bad though, but wasn't sure how to test. ???
It looked like there were 2 modules for switches on driver's door. There is top one, with 6 wires, which is same as the lower one. But there are 4 switches. Lower module goes to bottom 2 switches, it looks like, so it would seem top 6 wires would all go to 2 upper switches. So which wire controls the window lock?
And yes, manual said power windows have 30 amp circuit breaker at spot 26, and I replaced that first thing today. Are there other fuses for the windows? I bought a pack of those with the CB. Do you know which slots they are in?

Inside the black door sock(the thingy between the door and the door jam) you will find the primary ground (black wire) broken, you may even find the pink wire broken. You remove the driver side lower kick panel and remove the sock from the door side. You can then fish the wires that are broken through to the inside where you can splice a new wire on that is 4 inches longer. Then pass the new wire through the sock to the door and connect to the appropriate wire.
Then ALL your window function will be restored.

Willys55,
It sounds like you had the same problem. Did the windows act up when someone in the passenger seat used the switch on their side?

I'm a Auto Mechanic and I have fixed more than a hundred of these!
The wires can break in the driver door and even in the passenger door. They become brittle with age and break....simple as that.
