Parts Mismatch at Major Chain Parts Stores
I have a '98 Jeep ZJ 4.0 which is experiencing the dreaded intermittent stalling and no start. I want to buy a relay that goes in the Power Dist. Center, but the relays they have listed by function at O'Reilly's, AutoZone, etc. are larger than what are on my ZJ and have different pin arrangements.
The mismatches include: Fuel Pump Relay and ASD (Auto Shutdown) relay.

not sure if it's related, but in 98 the grand cherokees had 3 different engine, 4.0 6l, 5.2 v8 and 5.9 v8. are you sure the parts you got are for the 4.0 and not one of the 2 others?
one thing i usually do is check rockauto for parts and years, and go from there. no need to buy, just as a way of cross referencing parts

do they look different in person or are you just looking online? online photos are usually just generic and not a picture of the actual part

In person. (I had their relay in my hands) the available/recommended relays look exactly like the RockAuto photo. Their relays are square viewed from top or bottom, my relays are rectangular.

I've got a stop-gap idea. Just go to a junkyard and start ripping some out! They can't cost more than $1 each! They are basically all the same anyway. Or do what some guys do, wear cargo pants! Get it?

You need to verify the relay is a SPDT or SPST and the relay amperage

I never go to those places for things I really need. We have at least 1 independent auto parts store here with guys that have been working there for years, have experience and know cars. Not high school kids working at a part time job to get gas money who have some basic computer skills. I went into an Oriley last year to get a replacement lug nut and it took 2 people 15 minutes and several "here, try this one", before they got the right one. Try and non chain, old school parts store. Things usually cost a bit more, but its' generally a lot easier to get what you want the first time.

The OEM relays have a part number on them. Google search that and you will likely find the equivalent part number that the local parts store (or RA) carries.
