When you're towing or driving at highway speeds in hilly areas, it keeps the overdrive from engaging. Otherwise when towing in the hills it'll engage and disengage really often and can be bad for the transmission, and annoying!

X2. The button can be pressed at any speed.

Never tow anything while in overdrive.
