Oil pumping up?
 

Hello all,

The other day I hop in my jeep and start it up. There's a loud ticking noise coming from the hood (sound like the pistons). I turn the jeep off, pop the hood and check the oil. The oil is half way up the dip stick! I haven't added oil to this recently. So today I changed the oil, careful not to over fill. I put in just enough to get me half way up the "safe" marker. Start the jeep, let it run for a few mins. Turn it off, pull the dip stick, again the oil is now half way up the dip stick!! What's going on here? Is it possible the oil pump is pumping backwards or not at all. I changed the oil pump about 2 years ago. I'm also getting good oil pressure on the gauge.

This is normal, you have to let the oil sit a few minutes to get an accurate reading after it's been running. Check the oil before starting, and top it off to the full mark.

Are you wiping the dipstick off before re-stabbing it and then checking the oil level?

Normal? How is this normal? I've changed my oil many times and never experienced this before.

You're kidding, right?

The proper method to check the oil level with a dipstick is to have the vehicle on a level surface, turn the engine off, let the vehicle sit for a few mintues, pull the dipstick & wipe it clean, then restab the dipstick to the seat and remove it quickly and check where the film line is.

If you're not doing that, (or something at least close to it), you have no earthly idea what your actual oil level is.

sounds to me like the head light fluid is backing up into the engine maybe have the fill value gasket checked for back flow leaks

What I meant was, are there people out there who aren't wiping the dip stick before checking the oil? That's retarded! Why would you stick the dip stick in and then not wipe and stick it back in? My 2 year old nephew knows better!

In other words OF COURSE I wiped the stick before checking. The oil level was fine after the change. Left the car to sit for a bit, then came out, started it and let it run for a lil bit. Ticking is still there. Turn the car off, checked the oil and its way past the "safe" marker. Way past. And the oil on the dip stick is black. I just changed the oil and it's black on the dip stick. Yes, I let all the oil drain out before adding new oil.

Other than noise, how is it running? I have seen a few engines in the past with a leaking injector or simply flooded that would dump fuel into the crankcase. I would imagine it would be running very poorly, "knocking" or not start at all. I have seen enough fuel in the crankcase that it would ignite the dipstick if you waved a lighter across it. It would at least have a decent fuel odor if this is the case.

It could be a leaking headgasket, but if coolant was leaking into the crankcase it would quickly mix with the oil and look like some form of chocolate milk mix. This could be the case if you have not run the engine very long after the oil change, I would think a couple minutes would be enough time for coolant to mix with oil.

If the advise was taken like mentioned in the above posts, manily letting the vehicle sit, this would not help you at all to try to confirm your problem, a low oil level condition maybe, but not a high level condition.

Check it first thing in the morning before starting the engine, if it's ok then, no need to worry about it.
