Default Oil Pressure Prob

I noticed the other day on my wj that the oil pressure was running at 70psi. I thought that it was supposed to be more around 40psi. I have checked the oil level and have done an oil change since I noticed it with no improvement. I was wondering if this is something I could check for myself or I should have a shop take a look at it. I would hate for it to start causing problems. Thanks for your help.

i would still replace it i don't think they should read 70 psi they are cheap and easy to replace.

it may not be what you think it should read but it is almost exactly what it should read according to the manufacturer of the vehicle...look at an owners manual if you don't believe me but please don't give people false info.

At what rpm are you seeing the 70lbs? I doubt you should see that at idle, but once the rpm is up that could be ok.

Thanks guys for the info. It is def. at idle. Thats what seemed wierd to me. I Downloaded a service manual and will troubleshoot/replace the sending unit as needed. Weather looks favorable this weekend so I am gonna spend it working on the Jeep

i am not just giving out false info. even at full rpm's i have never seen a grand at 70 i had the same issue replaced a 15 dollar part and it read correct from then on. the sending units are known to give false readings when they get clogged or there is build up around the unit. he came on asking for help because this was something that was not happening before. thank you

Hi... I'm new here ... but same exact problem.

I only noticed it after I changed the oil. I changed the oil again, with different filter. Same problem. Replaced the sensor. Same problem. Drained the system completely, changed the oil. Same problem. It's at the dealer. I will post what they fix. If there is a fix.

too late to edit that comment out tough guy,i saw it on email...i read the post,if it had said "my oil pressure is 70 at idle" i would have suggested the same as a first step. Do your research before telling me i spout off random *****,the 4.7's normal oil pressure can range above 70 at higher rpm's,i've had 5 grand cherokee's and most have run well above 50 on average,my cherokee's too...i heard this is why they started putting on/off oil pressure gauges in 02

Well the best way to solve this and know for sure would be to a actual guage on the engine and run it. One directly screwed into the block. If there is a sending unit on these early years that supposedly show actual oil pressure lbs not that there is oil pressure then it is still a electronic version of the pressure. I have not seen a vehicle other then aftermarket where they will put an oil line into the dash to measure the pressure. Maybe on super cars.

If the part is that cheap I'm gonna pick it up soon. The service manual is about useless just tells you how to remove it not ohm it out with a meter and see if its reading incorrectly. Just wanted to make sure my engine wasn't going to blow up or anything. Thx for the help again

well even if you had that high of pressure, the only real threat would be that it would be excessive on the seals and could creat oil leaks. Won't hurt anyting else. Let us know the outcome.

Ok... same problem.

Dealer is replacing the oil pump. The valve on it isn't operating at the right psi. It's an easy $550 fix
