Oil Consumption New 2013 5.7 Hemi
My brand new 2013 Grand Cherokee is burning oil at the rate of 1 qt/2000 miles. Does this sound right?

Every engine will use some oil, but one quart in 2000 miles is way too much for a new engine. Have the dealer top off the oil and mark the dipstick, then drive it 500 miles and have them check the oil level. You have to create a paper trail to cover your butt so when the dealer or Chrysler tries to blow you off you will have proof in writing there is a problem.

TSB #09-001-12 Clearly defines 1 quart in 2000 miles as acceptable for Oil Consumption.
If you would like a copy, I'll try and down load it from my server...it's copied written and I can not "cut and paste" here.

Also.....we have found in our shop(we have a number of customers with 2011-2013 Hemi's) that running a slightly higher rate oil that is synthetic greatly reduces the oil consumption..

Yeah, my 4.0 with 206k on it hardly uses a drop of oil. You would think a modern engine with tighter tolerences would not use any oil.

Old fart with a wrench
My brother, who is a dyed-in-the-wool Chevy guy, thought he'd try a Dodge Ram Hemi. He wasn't happy at all with it and traded it in on a new Silverado 2 years latter. They just don't build Mopars like they used to. Too many suits trying to keep the company alive.
His major problems were brakes, wheel bearings, and broken exhaust manifolds.

x2, good call ******, when i worked for bmw, they stated 800 miles to quart is acceptable, i now werk for ford, and its like 900 miles, but the oil consumption test,(paper trail) is a very good idea, dont add oil though, let the dealer do it

Most of my Chevys used about a quart in 3000 miles. I thought that was acceptable. Anything more is questionable. My 97 ZJ 4.0 with 235K only used about 8 oz. in 3000 and I was amazed! Any engine should use some oil, but I find this hemi thing totally wrong!

Maybe that is the key, run it hard so you have more cylinder pressure to keep the rings tighter against the cylinder walls and keeping the oil out of the combustion chamber. Just a theory.
