Oil change advice... please help

Hi guys,

Looking to have an oil change on my 1999 GC limited V8 4.7 engine with 135,000 miles on it...

I just bought 6 quarts of 10W30 Mobil 1 high milage full-synthetic oil and Bosch distance plus filter...

Now ... this is the first time i'm going to use synthetic oil and do you think its a bad idea? As the engine has high miles on it? What do you use or advice?

Urgent advice is highly appreciated

I'm no expert but I was always told by my mechanic buddies that if you have a high milage vehicle you shouldn't switch to synthetic.

Your mechanic buddies are regurgitating BS they've heard that has been passed down since the 70s.

nothing wrong with Synthetic. I switched at 306k on my XJ and it ran wonderfully. Then i needed to change so often(because of water fording and offroading in sandy environments) that it made more sense to just buy WIX filters in bulk and my oil in 20L cans.

My ranger has 250k and runs synthetic, I switched it to synthetic at 240k and its still running without any leaks or burning.

So no there is no issue with it, people saying there are dont know what they're talking about usually.

It won't hurt anything if you switch to synthetic oil, all of that oil leaks caused by synthetic in a high mileage engine myth is crap. Just never use a Fram filter.

I always use original mopar, wix or bosch (distance plus) filters, and I try to buy high quality oils...

I'll keep you updated about the results.... "fingers crossed"

Gonna change it in an hour...

I'd switch to WIX to be honest, its a good filter, I'd say on par with the OEM or better and its generally cheaper. You can order them online for about 3.50 a piece in some cases

learn something new everyday. I just posted about a tune on my 05 gc I'll look into the wix filters.

I guess I made a small mistake and purchased 5 quarts of 5w30 and 1 quart of 10w30 oil...

Unfortunately I didn't realize that until I drained the oil and changed the filter and had no way to go and change it back....

I hope it wont create a major problem... what u think guys will I be ok for the next 5000 miles?

don't worry about it, you'll be fine.

OttawaXJ 03-22-2012 10:07 PM

I ran 5w30 4quarts and 1.5 quarts of old *** 10w30 laying around the garage in my ranger one time. ran like crap but it was fine until i could change it again.. and being I'm lazy i waited about 4000km.

3 days to the oil change and "knock on woods" no leaks so far... The engine appears or sounds more quiet and feels like running better..... I'll keep you guys updated.... Next fix TIRES!!!!

You can use a napa gold filter also. They are Wix filters with a napa decal on them.
