Odd 42re issue
The last three times I've pulled my boat out of the water at the end of the day (fairly steep launch ramp) my transmission will slip into neutral every 6" to 3'. Every time it slips out of gear, I have to stop, shift the lever through all gears, back into to drive, then hope it works. After slipping out about 5 or 6 times it will finally stay in gear. In the last 6 months I've also had it go into limp mode twice. Both times I just shut her off and everything was fine when I turned her back on. After the first time, I changed the fluid and filter, fluid wasn't burnt or anything and just the usual metal on the magnet. Aside from these occurrences, the transmission performs flawlessly. I have no slipping, grinding, hard shifts, nothing. I can't go long without fishing and this is my only tow vehicle, anyone have any ideas? Pulling the boat up the ramp is the only time I can get it to pop into neutral. The two times that it's gone into limp mode (starting in 3rd gear) I got code 37 when I cycled the key. No codes when pulling the boat out inch by inch. Thanks for any help!

Check your 02 sensor. Mine was Goin into limp mode. Turns out I had a busted wire. Mine was taking off in second. Changed the sensor and now all is well

I just put in new Bosch pre and post cat o2 sensors about a year ago when I put in a new converter.

Check the o-ring on the filter. It may be you're sucking air when on the sharp incline.

That sounds like a very logical possibility, I should've thought of that. I'll check it Sunday and update. Thanks.

So I checked my trans fluid again and it was still good, right in the middle of operating range. I went ahead and added a half quart to bring it right to the max. Went fishing on Sunday and she pulled the boat all the way up the looooong ramp perfectly. When I went on Friday (before adding fluid) it went neutral at least 10 times up the same ramp. I didn't think that going from mid to max on the dipstick would make such a difference. Then again this ramp is extremely steep right now, the mountain reservoir I go to (Lake McClure in Ca) is only at 26% capacity. Maybe I just underestimated quite how steep it was. That little bit of fluid must have been just enough to keep the pump from sucking air at that angle. I'm hoping this prevents the random limp mode as well, but it's hard to say yet because it's only happened twice over a very long period of time.
