First thing I'd do would be replace the cat and install a new oxygen sensor.. needed for the computer to set the fuel correctly. these vehicles were designed to have the cat installed and the computer expectes it to be there.. messes up the calibrations if not there... I know some run without them, but most will at least drill a hole and weld on a bung and reinstall the oxygen sensor for the computer... Keep in mind most states require you to keep on road vehicles with all there OEM installed air quarity equipment. Besides they seem to run great with them as they are not as restricive as they used to be. I read some test run at drag strips and difference in times was mininual. I would start there then unhook the computer/ battery for a time and then reconnect and see where it get you in a week or so. sometimes takes the computer a few days to correct itself..

If it's a 96' then it should be OBDII, which means you'll have two O2 sensors, one on the down pipe and then one on the cat, you need both for it to run without throwing a code.

Put the cat back on it and plug in the O2 sensors. You can get a slip on universal cat for a 100 bucks and NGK sensors for around $50.

BUY a cat and put it in, plug in the O2 sensors and it'll fix all your problems, I promise.

I don't see what your heater has to do with your exhaust system.

Like he said you need a good base to start from... You need the cat and o2 sensors to work property.
