noisy and lose power on my grand cherokee
Hi, new member here.
My car:
1998 grand cherokee V6 4WD
New battery, alternaoter and starter about 7 months ago.
Have leaky AC and a few mechanic could not figure it out.
Now the problem.
First, there is a noise coming from the front. From my research, I think it is the ac compressor clutch. Initially, the noise will only come when the fan is on. Later on, noise comes and goes. Now the noise stays on.
Secondly, my car would suddenly loses its power. Totally dead. No light on the dash board. No nothing. I currently connect a wire from the negative terminal to the ac compressor. The car stays on and never loses its power. But I know something was wrong.
Anybody got any idea?

Hi,Seed. Thank you for your reply. I will double check the ground tomorrow. It was replaced when I replaced the battery.
Good news. I fasten the belt a little bit now the noise is gone. So I guess the noise is due to the loose belt. I will report back if the noise does not come back for over a few days.

A loose serpantine belt would definitely explain your periodic loss of power and noise from the front of the motor. The problem with your A/C pump could be causing the belt to stretch.

Can you clarify the engine? Is it a I6 (4.0L) or a V8 (4.7L) Jeep did not put V6s in teh grand cehrokees until 05 or 06.

hi, everybody. Just want to report back that tightening the belt seems to fix the problem. I didnot notice any noise or sudden power off for over a week. Thanks again for everybody's help.
To answer the last question of TSconver. the engine is a V6.
